Google Is Simplifying the SERP. SEO Teams Should Pay Attention.
SEO teams have spent years treating SERP features like stable real estate.
Win the enhancement. Keep the enhancement. Build reporting around it. Assume it will remain part of the search experience for the foreseeable future.
That assumption is getting weaker.
Google has been sending a clear signal: the search results page is being simplified, low-usage features are being removed, and support for some structured-data-driven experiences is being phased out across Search, Search Console, and the API.
The important story is not just that a few rich result types disappeared. It is that search feature volatility is becoming a real SEO topic.
The numbers behind the shift
In June 2025, Google officially deprecated seven structured-data-driven Search features: Book Actions, Course Info, Claim Review, Estimated Salary, Learning Video, Special Announcement, and Vehicle Listing.
Google said these features were not commonly used in Search and no longer delivered meaningful additional value for users.
Then the tooling side started changing too.
On September 9, 2025, Google removed support for six of those feature types from Search Console rich result reporting, the Rich Results Test, and Search appearance filters. Search Console API support for those features continued only through December 2025, and deprecated appearance fields in bulk export were set to become null by October 1, 2025.
Google later said that, starting in January 2026, support for the affected structured data types would also be removed from Search Console and its API. Practice Problem structured data was also deprecated from Search as part of the same simplification effort.
That means the pruning story is not a one-off cleanup. It is a pattern.
This is bigger than schema cleanup
It would be easy to dismiss this as housekeeping around obscure schema types. That would miss the point.
Google also removed mobile breadcrumbs globally in January 2025, leaving only the domain visible in that part of the mobile result. That move showed the same broader instinct: simplify the interface, reduce clutter, and remove elements that are not pulling their weight.
So the real lesson is not about one markup type or one visual treatment. It is about the durability of search enhancements in general.
SEO teams should stop thinking of every SERP feature as permanent infrastructure.
Why this matters operationally
A feature disappearing from the SERP has two consequences.
First, the visible value of the markup can drop to zero, even if the structured data itself remains technically valid.
Second, reporting pipelines break or become less useful. Search appearance filters disappear. Export fields go null. Historical comparisons become messier. Dashboards built around those appearances lose meaning.
That makes SERP feature volatility an operational risk, not just a UX change in Google.

For a long time, SEO teams could chase enhancements as though the SERP was gradually expanding and every new display treatment was another durable surface to win.
That is not the environment now.
Google is willing to prune. Willing to simplify. Willing to retire features that do not get enough usage or do not create enough value.
That pushes SEO toward a more durable core.
The assets that age best are still the fundamentals: crawlability, internal linking, clean site structure, original useful content, clear merchant and product data where relevant, and technically sound pages that deserve visibility whether or not a specific SERP feature survives.
In other words, the center of gravity moves back toward discoverability, not decoration.
Search feature volatility is now part of the job
There is a broader lesson here for technical and strategic SEO teams.
Search is no longer just about tracking rankings and adding enhancements. It is also about understanding which layers of visibility are stable and which are conditional.
Rich results, appearance filters, and SERP treatments can change faster than many organizations expect. That means roadmaps, reporting, and feature prioritization need to account for volatility explicitly.
Not every opportunity deserves the same level of investment. Not every enhancement deserves to anchor a long-term strategy.
